Have you recently had outdoor pavers installed in Christchurch or the surrounding area? Whether it’s for your home’s pathway or patio, or part of a commercial project like a roundabout or car park, it’s important to take these steps to maintain their condition:
Clean and Sweep the Pavement
As debris can accumulate on the pavement, you should sweep it at least once monthly. You might need to go even further and deep clean it if, for example, vehicles often drive over it and leave it with grease and oil puddles.
Fix Small Cracks and Potholes
It might be tempting to resist doing anything about such minor instances of damage. However such crevices can grow — and, as a result, become harder and more expensive to rectify. For example, water that seeps into cracks in the pavement can weaken it from the inside.
Apply Sealcoat Every Few Years
What is sealcoat? It is a liquid asphalt you would coat thinly across paving to replenish protection that may have worn away over time.
That’s why you should generally add a fresh layer of sealcoat every two to three years. You might get away with holding off the job for a few years longer if the paving rarely takes much of a battering.
Repaint Pavement Markings as and When Necessary
Of course, in such commercial areas as car parks, painted markings previously left on the pavement can start fading due to the effects of harsh weather. If this has happened on your paving, repainting work could be in order.
If the Paving is Used Often, Consider When to Replace It
The more foot traffic your paving endures, the quicker you may find yourself budgeting for repairs. However, it’s wise to consider more comprehensive maintenance, perhaps every ten years or so.
